Intersections or junctions are areas where two or more roads meet or combine.
These areas can have a variety of configurations as explained below:
- T intersection /junction : With this configuration, the roads meet perpendicularly (at 90degrees) to each other.
- Y intersection / junction: In this configuration, roads meet at an angle to each other resembling the letter Y
- Cross roads: Roads cross through each other evenly
- Staggered Intersection: This is a main road with two oppositely placed side roads joining it at two different points
- Side road: This is an intersection of a major road with a minor road. An example of this is a road that goes off a highway is a side road intersection or junction.
- Mad intersections/ junctions: These are intersections where two main roads meet with no regulatory devices like traffic lights. Their name is derived from the concept of no law applying to this intersection except drivers exercising caution.
Intersections pose a great risk to road safety when misused and a few rules have to be followed at intersections or junctions to ensure safety is not compromised
- Always exercise the right of way rule: All vehicles joining a main road should wait until it is safe to join without interrupting traffic flow.
- Approach junctions with care whether when going off the main road or joining the main road
- Turn signals should be used a distance before turning off the main road and also as you are joining the main road. This gives room for anticipation by other road users.
- In case a vehicle is crossing through an intersection, hazard lights should be used at all times when crossing through the intersection. This gives drivers on both ends an anticipatory feeling of turning towards their end forcing them to slow down for you to cross through the intersection.
